Wine Profile | Chianti

Unlocking the Flavors of Chianti

Fiasco_di_chianti_monteriggioniChianti is a much talked about red wine blend out of Tuscany. Chianti is made with Sangiovese grapes and is known for its characteristic tartness and hint of spice. Other grapes are often mixed into Chianti but traditionally, white grapes are typically excluded from the blend. For a wine to be classified as a Chianti, there must be an 80/20 mix of Sangiovese to other red grapes.

The taste includes notes of:

  • Cherries
  • Strawberries
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Smoke

The basic tart chianti is aged for six months. The longer the wine is aged, the smoother the acidity and more powerful the boldness is said to be. If you’re looking for a wine that really transports you to classic Italy, look no further than a nice glass of Chianti

chianti_mulberrywinecellarChianti  often pairs well with:

  • Tomato-based Sauces
  • Pizzas
  • Rich Meats

(The jury is still out on its pairing with fava beans!)
